COVER

These images represent the creation of the cover for out magazine,  how it started based on our plans and all the changes and alterations done for it to completely satisfy our and the audience's expectations. Taking into consideration the beneficial technical and strategic aspects.

Images will open up in a po-up if clicked, for a better viewing of the changes done that lead to the final version, which is presented later on in the page.

FINAL VERSION

MASTHEAD :

When talking about the colour chosen; after many trials, we decided that white was the best option. Given that the colours of the photograph were black and white and we did not want to break the balance created in this page, with other colours such as red.

Additionally because of the position the contrast between the white colour of the masthead and the black background (models hair) complemented each other perfectly.

As noticeable, the masthead is the most eye catching characteristic in the cover, this was done by choosing a bigger size than the rest of the text present and by positioning it in the left top corner. Which we got inspiration from various magazines with the same genre, such as i-D.

Although it is the biggest element found in this page, it is not as big as other magazines opt for, but we decided not to exaggerate and follow the theme of simplicity in accordance with this size convention.

BYLINE :

There are multiple reason we decided to include a byline, which contrasts with the absence of other elements such as a a headline.

The main reason behind this decision was based on the idea that the entire issue is photographed by the same photographers, in this case us.

Which is uncommon in most magazines especially if the photographers aren't "famous". This is also why we considered more accurate and relevant for the issue number to be there and create a correlation between the photographers and magazine itself.

We also based this decision on the magazines we used as general guidelines, and combined their characteristics.

Moreover, continuing with the concept of simplicity, we did not want to overload the page, which explains its minimal size.

In terms of colours and position, similarly to the masthead, we thought that the contrast created by the white text and black background would make the text more evident and visually pleasing, rather than white on white.

Supported  by a simple and refined font which contrasts the one used in the masthead, but in an harmonious way.

PHOTOGRAPH :

I believe that deciding upon which photograph to use for our magazine's cover was one of the hardest decisions.

We knew we wanted something simple and captivating, which is why we opted for an image where the model looked straight into the camera in order to generate a certain connection between the readers and the picture, highlighted by the position of the model.

Which supports our main idea behind the entire cover creation, which is intrigue.

By intrigue, we mean the curiosity created by the minimality that characterises this page.

We wanted to capture the audience's attention by using a neutral photograph, which is why we decided for it to be B&W, given that we believe it represents neutrality and objectivity.

Not teasing the colours and vitality that the magazine conveys inside. Leaving the audience to decode their own significanc in regards to the image, its colours, simplicity and style.

Furthermore the colour decision was also supported by magazines we researched, most of them used a B&W picture as cover, which can be considered a growing trend in fashion magazines, in general.

We ended up choosing a more

'expressive rather than explicit' picture.

Furthermore, developing the idea of text and selection as well as exclusion, we clearly decided to exclude conventions such as a headline, sky-line and pull-out quotes...

Most fashion magazines with arts as a

sub-genre, do not include these, at least not in the way that commercial magazines such as Elle and Vogue do, which we found out by researching and analysing various magazines. This is one of the reasons we chose not to incorporate them.

Another aspect which influenced this decision was the fact that we believe that by including certain names, quotes and titles we create a more commercially driven approach towards the audience, by teasing and seducing them in a forceful way, which is something that contradicts our perspective and preferences in magazines.
