DOUBLE SPREAD

Here you can see the various changes done during the creation of the double spread.

Which was the most challenging aspect for me, in terms of organisation and creativity.

The final version is presented below these images, with its respective explanation.

FINAL VERSION

PHOTOGRAPHS :

The pictures chosen represent in two diverse way nudity and its perception. The first one reflects a more common an acceptable way of representing nudity as a concept in a fashion magazine. We decided to include it in order to respect some conventions of fashion magazines and be able to include brands of the few items the model is wearing, and to highlight the idea that nowadays it is still a censored topic, as the paint splash does in this case.

The image on the right on the other hand reflects our ideas regarding the perception of nudity, as the model is embracing her figure is a simple and graceful way. This picture was included in black and white  with the focus on greys with the purpose of enhancing the other colours present in the spread. As well as encouraging the neutral approach of the audience towards the topic chosen and relation it to elegance rather than vulgarity.

Furthermore we decides to size them this way in order to play with symmetry and add diverse elements to the page, taking inspiration from magazines such as Atlas.

The brand of the items the model is wearing, together with the name of the model are included, which could be considered as a by-line in this case. The size of the text is a medium one, bigger than the one most magazines use for this aspect, given that we did not include the models name in the cover, we wanted it to be noticed in the double-spread. We decided to put it in the white borders besides this image in order for it not disturb the composition of the photograph which it would have done if included inside.

QUOTE :

We opted to include a quote rather than an article in the first spread, to approach the concept in a more neutral way and give our reader the possibility to reflect upon its meaning in relation to what the images convey in a connotative level, from their own perspective before reading about ours.

The font chosen is the same as the one used for the credits of brand and model in order for the spread to be consistent.

We opted to put it in this way, rather than in a single sentence on top as we also tried, in order for our audience to contemplate the image meanwhile reading and comprehending the quote. We also believe it fits more the aesthetics of the rest of

'Nudity & Perspective".

FOLIO :

The page number is sized bigger than it is done in most conventional magazines in the fashion genre. This was because we  preferred the special characteristic it gave this simple spread and watched more the attention, which we found out by asking for feedback from people who fit our target market. Instead of including it in both pages, it was more effective and complementary to put in in just one in a bigger and bolder format half partially hidden by the yellow supplementary shape.

We know that it is uncommon for even numbers to be written in the right page, usually the odd numbers are represented in the right page.

We decided to challenge this, and use an even number which would be in reference to the left page but we positioned it in the right one because it was more visually pleasing. But the number reference and the counting starts from the left page.

We are planning on changing this aspect based on the feedback our target audience will give us once the first issue is published, based on whether or not it is simple to understand this alternation.

COLOURS :

In terms of colours, yellow was the special touch we need i order to complete the spread and increase its vitality. We considered it the best option because it matched the background colours of the image chose for the left page and it contradicted the expectations of monotony created by the colour scheme of the cover and table of contents.
