Masthead

Detailed-dtld

Initially we were thinking about names such as Complexity or  just a mixture of our initials, but  we have decided and realized that DETAILED  was the most appropriate option since it directly reflects what we want to represent with and throughtout this magazine.

Detailed to us, in relation to our magazine, means comprehensive, and to a certain extent, all-inclusive meaning that we would like for it to be simple but highlighting details and characteristics, both in its appearance and content,

which is what, in our opinion, will make it complete.

Furthermore in terms of logo and masthead, we would prefer for it to be spelled without the vowels which is mainly because it shows minimality and the fact that something is missing and in order to find out more you have to "discover" whats inside or read in between  the lines.

In terms of the logo itself and its characteristics my colleague Elisa has been mainly the one working on it, so e drafts which lead to the final version, which we got to by exchanging opinions and modyifying it until we both were content with it. Initially we planned to use one of the hand-written drafts and then scan it in order to vectorise it but it did not convince us.

So furthermore we tried creating it directly on Illustrator and in order to give it less of a technical look more of a naturalise we decided for the 'detailed" part to be with a hand-written font which would give it more of a personal touch but it would still transmit simplicity.

Final Version

some drafts my colleague Elisa has worked on until now.

The colour used throughout the entire magazine will be mostly desaturated and neutral with some strong accents which we managed to capture also in some of the pictures of the photoshoots, such as red.

This explains the choice of colour regarding the masthead, which we hesitated between black or white depending on the image chosen for the cover of the magazine.

But as we observed from the magazine we analyzed that inspired us, the colour of the masthead does vary depending on the issue, although it does remain in the same range of tones,so no drastic changes, which we could implement as an aspect of ours too.

This would create contrast between the masthead and the rest of the colour choices but not a striking one, it would still represent a minimal style, and it would create a simple characteristic and in terms of marketing it would help the audience recognise it, the magazine, easily.

Below, by clicking on the following pictures, you will be able to observe the flat plans we have worked on in order to base the creation of our magazine and compositions of the pictures. They were drawn by mi colleague Elisa and represent a mixture of our main ideas regarding the form the magazine would take.

FlatPlans

As observable by the final version of the magazine (its cover, table of contents, double-spread and even back cover) we did not end up following the exact style represented by the flat plans, since they were just a guide during the production of our product.

Although the alternations done still follow and reflect the same type of symmetry and aesthetics wanted initially.

COVER

The main idea regarding the cover                     for Detailed, was based around

impact, minimality and intrigue. This

meant, creating something that would

attract the audience based on a

certain curiosity emerged from the

level of simplicity it would represent

rather than by "pull-out quotes" and

famous names. We knew that in order               to do this we had create a level of

neutrality and choose a picture in

which the model was looking into the               camera, given it would create

a directness between the picture and                 the readers.

Table of Contents

In the Table of contents, we wanted to follow a more conventional path in order to still have clear characteristics that fit generally for most magazines. Although, conventional trough our own perspective, which is why our main idea was to add various pictures for each section of the magazine, in a rectangular way, to tease the audience about the specific editorial present.

We did change the positions of the pictures

and most details in the page,

(which you will be able to observe in the Coursework Development section)

But this helped us a lot make a clear represetation of the

objectives we had in mind.

Double Spread

In the double spread, we decided to touch the topic of 'Nudity & Perspective' given that is the one we were the most enthusiastic about and preferred the photographs taken.

As noticeable we did not plant to follow the conventions used by commercial magazines, we wanted to transamit it in an artistic perspective.

We focused on simplicity and concentrating the attention in the photography rather than include the article in this first pages.

This was mainly because we knew from the start that we did not want to solely convey a message, we wanted to transmit it in a visceral way.

Which is why to a certain extent these plans can be considered counter-intuitive, because we wanted to experiment with mouldable ideas rather than follow a strict plan.

Which explain why these do not include detailed characteristics of what we wanted it to include, since we just knew it had to focus on simplicity and photography and their relation with the conceptual ideas.

Fonts

We dowloaded various samples from websites such as Dafont and FontFabric.

As primary idea for the font, we wanted to have multiple options, a maximum of 4 main one to use throughout the entire magazine in order to create diversity and use each in relation to the style of each section.

Regarding the style,we had in mind something simple, refined but to a certain extent informal in order to approach the audience to reflect an organic and casual approach, which would fit with the style of the entire magazine and leave the focus on the photography.

The final fonts we chose and used :

- Ostrich Sans : bylines

folios in the Table of Contents

                              text in the double spread
