video
analysis
This video forms part of Daniele Luppi's latest project, focused on fictionalized stories. It was directer by Barnaby Clay, who through the use of compelling visuals complemented by mulptiple up-beat songs attracts the audience's attention and creates a complex but aesthetically pleasing style.
Elements such as the contrast between the music and the character's actions, the vintage style but modern props such as the iPhone create a sense of confusion in relation to the narrative, time and space.
Pretty Prizes is one of my main inspirations for my music video when taking into consideration

Altough it has more of a clear plot and timeline, I would like to include some of the elements present but based on a conceptual and interpretative genre.
the mise en scène
shots
emphasis on a single character
controversy &
confusion created
MUSIC
Scenery change accompanied by the start of the music as being a background diegetic sound. Common for such videos but would be considered a subevrtion if used in music videos, altough not unlikely for the indie genre.

Futhermore the rest of the video continues with a gradual increase of the music's volume and a change of songs, all along the actions of Soko which at a certain moment could be considered
countrapuntal ending scence revelation
recreates a vintage setting and style in accordance to the period represented (1980s). This style is recognizable by the audience given it's presence in most of B.Clay's works
low lighting
unsaturated color tones
few bright elements
MISE EN SCÈNE
characterized by :
CHARACTERS
Introductory scene of the main character acted by Stephanie Sokolinkski (Soko) talking at the phone in her car, filmed with establishing and medium shots.

suggests the relevance of the character
guides the narrative throughout the entire video, which is an aspect I will adopt in my music video.
The entire video revolves around a single character Kelly Zutrau, Wet's vocalist.
choice of a female character linked to the meaning of the song, refers to the the dysfunctional/toxic relationship the protagonist is in and her necessity to detach.
She is presented surrounded by nature thorugh the use of various close-up shots, changing along her movements accompanied by the lyrics.
indicates that she's the central element of the video, also shown through the balanced composition of overlapping of shots
MISE EN SCÈNE
characterized by :
main location - natural environment

second - room - represents old footage and evokes a feeling of reminisce
forest lake
warm saturated colors
contrast between the organic green and the singers bright red hair
minimal clothing
creation of a vintage and minimal scenario done through the use of low quality shots filmed with a 90s film camera, high quality aeria/birds eye view shots and glitch effects
MUSIC
The music starts with an increasing rythim which goes along the visuals edited following a cute-to-the-beat technique.

When the vocals start, they co-occur with diverse shots of the singer moving and singing - lip sync techinique is introduced.
CHARACTERS
This music video, directed by Beauty Today (a magazine focused on gender equality and woman empowerement) belongs to the Indie/Alternative R&B group Wet (originally from Brookly-New York) for their song 'Don't wanna be your girl'. It is a conceptual music video that creaters a subliminal link with the lyricism, characterised by its enthralling and rather abstract visuals.
The conceptual style of this video is a source of inspiration for my creation. When taking into consideration the way in which the artists covertly lead the audience's perception on the meaning of the song through the use of simple but well composed visual elements, props and editing.
Futhermore when comparing this music video to the one for the acoustic version of the song, one can notice the particular style of this group which creates a sense of familiarity altough it represents more of a conventional alternative.
This is the music video for Charlotte Lawrence's ( American singer, from L.A - video's location) song "Sleep Talinkg". This video can be considered representative for the artist's genre and the various conventions it follows, when compared to other pop music videos such as Dead - Madison Beer.
The features of this video which inspire me are :

the link it sublety creates with the lyrics of the song by providing the audience with a visual context and clear storyline, common in narrative and illustrative music videos.

the simple and casual style of the video complemented with a wide variety of shots
- aerial, close-ups, medium, long,tilted-
the use of angles to present the relevance of characters.
the grain effect.
CHARACTERS
The video starts by presenting the main character, in this case being the singer Charlotte Lawrence - then joined by Cole Hutzler who represents her partner in this video, which creates a link between the visuals and the meaning of the song.
Another known artist and singer from the music group Strange Faces, altough he is simply a model in this video his inclusion could be analysed as a promotional strategy to attract a wider audience.
Altough there are two characters presented it is evident that Charlotte is the main one, not only when analysing the lyrics and view point of the song - highlighted in the ending scene - but her greater number of shots, their composition and the angles from which she's filmed.
MISE EN SCÈNE
characterized by :
main location - Los Angeles, Venice beach
second - room

crowded place
urban & casual
a reference to the title and chorus of the song.
this video is also aiming and recreating an older style (increasingly popular trend) by :
black & white
grain to give the impression of lower quality
clothing - denim on denim (90s trend)
MUSIC
The music throughout the entire video is accompanied by shots main character singing along, edited with a lip sync technique, and in some instances the use of cut-to-the-beat at the pace and change of instrumentals.
